of Clinica Dental Joan Ramis in Puerto de Pollença.

Dr. Joan Ramis is the director of the Clinica Dental Joan Ramis (Joan Ramis Dental Clinic), a family-run institution that has been a staple in Puerto de Pollença for over 30 years. Following in the footsteps of his father, who established the first clinic in Sa Pobla in 1954, Dr. Ramis has brought his own son Joan into the practice, ensuring the family tradition continues.

Renowned for its “SLOW dentistry” approach, the clinic emphasises personalised, unhurried care. They offer a comprehensive range of services, from routine dental treatments to implants and maxillofacial surgery. A standout feature of their practice is the innovative “Teeth in a Day” procedure, which utilises artificial intelligence to help patients achieve a renewed smile in a single visit.

In this interview, Dr. Ramis shares his passion for dentistry, insights into advances in his field, and how these developments have attracted international patients seeking “dental tourism.”

Dr. Ramis, can you tell us about your journey in dentistry?

We are a family-oriented dental clinic that has been serving the Puerto de Pollença community for 30 years. My father opened his first practice in Sa Pobla in 1954, and now my son Joan is the third generation to carry on this legacy. We pride ourselves on treating our patients with the same care and respect we would expect for ourselves. Our approach is unique; we operate as a SLOW clinic, prioritising quality over quantity. This means we take the time to focus on each patient’s dental health, ensuring they receive personalised treatment over the years.

Our specialties cover a wide range of dental needs—from basic care to advanced procedures like implants and maxillofacial surgery. Importantly, our patients see the same specialists from their first consultation, which fosters trust and continuity in their care.

A key highlight of our services is the “Teeth in a Day” procedure. This innovative treatment allows us to extract all teeth and replace them with a new set in a single day, guided by advanced artificial intelligence. We even have a specialist from New York University who visits us from London a few times a month, and we collaborate with a facility in Switzerland to create a temporary set of teeth for patients to use until their permanent set is ready.

Do you recall your first experience performing an extraction or administering anesthesia?

Absolutely. The journey into healthcare is one of continuous learning. I spent a year observing how my father and brother treated patients in Sa Pobla before I began performing interventions under my father’s guidance. I grew up immersed in dentistry; my father often worked on Sundays to accommodate our patients. From a young age, I was familiar with the tools, the patients, and the intricacies of dental care.

You often mention the phrase “Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body, Healthy Mind.” Can you elaborate on that?

This statement holds true in many ways. The mouth is intricately linked to overall health. Recent scientific research has revealed connections between oral bacteria and systemic diseases. For example, bacteria typically found in the mouth have been detected in the brain and heart after a stroke, underscoring the importance of oral hygiene. In fact, the Spanish Academy of Cardiologists advocates for maintaining a healthy mouth to prevent heart disease. Moreover, proper chewing initiates digestion and helps the body process food more efficiently. By keeping our mouths free of bacteria and cavities, we can also reduce the risk of transmitting diseases through saliva. Therefore, oral hygiene is vital for overall health.

You mentioned having international clients. Can you tell us more about that?

Yes, at Clinica Dental Joan Ramis (Joan Ramis Dental Clinic), we actively engage in “dental tourism.” We attract patients from abroad, particularly from the UK, who often send us their x-rays in advance. They typically visit us for one to two weeks to complete their treatments—especially implants—and leave with a brand new set of teeth at a significantly lower cost than in the UK. Their local clinic then handles follow-up care.
