Embracing the Season of Renewal
BY AMRITA DEVI
Spring whispers are in the air! Longer days, vibrant blooms, and a gentle sounds of bugs in the breeze calling in a new season. Can you feel it stirring within you too?
Is Your Body Ready to Bloom?
If you like to watch nature, you would have noticed how it awakens from its winter slumber, so too can you. Here are some signs you might be ready to shed the heaviness of winter and embrace spring's energy:
-
Waking up with a clear, refreshed mind.
-
Feeling energised and motivated throughout the day.
-
A spark of excitement to plan for the future.
-
Creativity blossoms with fresh ideas and new seasonal ingredients.
At this time of the year Spring Cleaning is more than just for your home...
Its not all fun for everyone at this time, I know, flowers mean pollen. For those of us with an undermimined immune system this can be a challenging time for allergies. And in Ayurveda that means boost your immune system with an internal spring clean, the perfect time for a personal cleanse. Imagine yourself like a seed, ready to push through the soil and reach for the light. But cluttered ground (both physical and internal) can hinder your growth.
This season, consider a one day or twenty one day cleanse to shed any winter residue and create space for new beginnings. Here are some practices to help you feel your best.
Kickstart Your Day:
-
Warm lemon water with a touch of sea salt: Wakes up your digestive fire and prepares you for elimination.
-
Hot water throughout the day: Aids in clearing congestion and promoting internal cleansing.
Nourish Your Body & Mind:
-
Meditation: Focus on your intentions and what you wish to cultivate in the coming season.
-
Exercise outdoors: Embrace the sunshine with invigorating workouts like dynamic yoga.
-
Steam or hot baths: Let your worries sweat away while cleansing your skin.
Food for Thought (and Growth):
-
Lighten your diet: Decrease heavy, oily and fried foods.
-
Embrace seasonal flavours: Introduce more bitter, spicy, and astringent foods like arugula, radish, and fennel (see my Fennel Fronds Pesto recipe below!).
Shift Your Perspective:
-
Inversions (yoga poses): Gain a fresh view on the world, both physically and metaphorically.
Spring Forward with Renewed Energy!
This season of growth is the perfect time to:
-
Launch new projects fueled by spring socialising fever.
-
Unroll your yoga mat and reconnect with your practice.
-
Sow the seeds of your dreams and watch them flourish in a moon circle.

Embrace the vibrant flavours of spring with this versatile Fennel Fronds Pesto! This vegan and flavorful condiment is perfect for adding a bright, herbaceous touch to sandwiches, tempeh, bean dishes, pasta, and more.
Ingredients:
2 packed cups chopped fennel fronds (from about 2 bulbs)
2 packed cups chopped parsley
1 tablespoon chopped ginger root
½ to 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
¼ cup unsalted pumpkin seeds (or walnuts, pecans, cashews, or pine nuts)
4-8 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Salt to taste
Juice of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (optional)
Instructions:
-
Prep the Ingredients: Wash and thoroughly dry the fennel fronds. Roughly chop them and discard the tough stems. Peel and chop the ginger.
-
Blend it Up: In a food processor, combine the fennel fronds, ginger, black pepper, and pumpkin seeds (or your chosen nut/seed). Pulse a few times to break down the ingredients.
-
Oil It Up: With the motor running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil until the pesto reaches your desired consistency. Start with 4 tablespoons and add more for a thinner pesto.
-
Seasoning Magic: Season with salt to taste. Add the lemon juice and nutritional yeast (if using) and pulse again to combine.
-
Get Creative!: Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
Tips:
Storage: Store leftover pesto in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Drizzle a thin layer of olive oil on top to prevent browning.
Serving Inspiration: Spread pesto on toasted bread, use it as a dip with crudités, toss it with pasta for a flavourful meal, or add a dollop to tempeh or tofu for a flavorful vegan protein dish.
Spice it Up: Want a bit of a kick? Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a chopped fresh chili pepper while blending.
Enjoy the taste of spring with this versatile and delicious Fennel Fronds Pesto!
