Unlock the Secret to Thriving: Discover Your Dosha

BY AMRITA DEVI

Have you ever wondered why some health advice works wonders for others but leaves you feeling flat? Or why do certain foods energise one person but leave you feeling sluggish? The answer might lie in something much deeper than a simple diet or exercise routine. It might be time to discover your dosha—the key to unlocking a life of balance, vitality, and true well-being.

As an Ayurvedic health expert, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power that understanding your dosha can bring. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine that I hold close to my heart, is built on the concept of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These doshas are not just abstract concepts—they represent the unique energies within each of us, influencing our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. When we align our lives with our dosha, we open the door to a world of harmony and balance that can touch every aspect of our existence.

What Is a Dosha, and Why Does It Matter?

Think of your dosha as your personal blueprint for optimal health and well-being. The doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are energies that govern all physiological and psychological processes in your body. Each person has a unique combination of these doshas, and when they are in balance, you experience health, vitality, and emotional equilibrium. However, when your doshas are out of balance, it can lead to physical ailments, mental unrest, and emotional turbulence.

Understanding your dosha is like being handed the key to your own unique operating manual. Imagine living in sync with your true nature, knowing exactly what to eat, how to exercise, and even how to think to maintain your optimal health. That’s the power of discovering your dosha. It’s not just about managing illness—it’s about thriving in every way possible: mentally, emotionally, and physically.

My Journey to Balance: The Power of Knowing My Dosha

For years, I struggled with imbalances that Western medicine couldn’t fully address. I dealt with a restless mind, digestive issues, and fluctuating energy levels that left me feeling frustrated and out of sync with myself. It wasn’t until I discovered my dosha that everything began to make sense. As I delved deeper into Ayurveda, I realised that my challenges were tied to a Vata dosha imbalance provoked by inconsistent lifestyle habits.

With this knowledge, I began to make changes that were aligned with my dosha. As I became more mindful with my eating, my mind really started to calm down and I started to feel more nourished.  I embraced a more calming routine that soothed agitation and made a conscious effort to avoid the overstimulation that tipped me out of balance. The changes were profound, and I felt like I had finally found the missing piece of my health puzzle. Understanding my dosha didn’t just help me manage my symptoms—it transformed my entire approach to life.

Kitchari - Traditional Ayurvedic Cleansing Dish

Kitchari
(Traditional Ayurvedic Cleansing Dish)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup split yellow mung dal (lentils), rinsed

  • 1/2 cup basmati rice, rinsed

  • 1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp turmeric root sliced fine

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder

  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds

  • 1 pinch of asafoetida (hing)

  • 4-5 cups of water (adjust for desired consistency)

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

  • Optional: A small piece of ginger, chopped

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the mung dal and basmati rice thoroughly until the water runs clear. Set them aside.

  2. Heat the ghee in a large pot over medium heat.  Add the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and fennel seeds, allowing them to sizzle for a few seconds until they release their aroma.

  3. Add the asafoetida and ginger (if using) to the pot, sautéing for about 30 seconds.

  4. Add the turmeric, coriander, and cumin powders to the pot, stirring well to combine.

  5. Add the rinsed mung dal and rice to the pot, stirring to coat them with the spices.

  6. Pour in 4-5 cups of water, depending on how thick or soupy you want your kitchari. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the mung dal and rice are soft and fully cooked. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  7. Once the kitchari is cooked, add salt to taste and stir well. Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.

Ayurvedic Benefits:

  • Balancing: Kitchari is a balancing dish for all doshas, especially during cleansing or detox periods.

  • Easy Digestion: It’s easy on the digestive system, making it ideal for those recovering from illness or experiencing digestive issues.

  • Nourishing: The combination of rice and mung dal provides complete protein, while ghee adds healthy fats that support digestion and overall health.

Enjoy this comforting and nourishing dish as part of your Ayurvedic routine!
