The Secret to Stopping Time -
How to Avoid Premature Wrinkles

When it comes to your skin, wrinkles are natural, normal, and nothing to be ashamed of. But if you’d rather prolong the time it takes until they begin to develop, you might be worried about premature wrinkles. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent those fine lines from popping up early.

Before we start, it’s important to understand a bit more about wrinkles. Unwelcome wrinkles are classified as either dynamic or static, depending on how they form. Dynamic lines are visible during facial expressions like laughing, smiling, or squinting. Static wrinkles are lines that are always there.  Dynamic wrinkles generally start to appear in the late twenties to early thirties, and static wrinkles in the early to mid-thirties. However, wrinkles can develop earlier due to several external factors. These premature lines are often preventable and are typically caused by certain behaviours and habits. If you’ve been noticing more fine lines than expected and feel they’re appearing prematurely, here are some reasons why this might be happening, and what you can do to address them:

1. Are you sleeping face down and scrunched up!?
Sleeping on your stomach can speed up aging. I know most of us probably DON’T sleep like this, but it can have a massive effect due to your face being compressed for long periods of time. This can lead to early wrinkling. If sleeping on your back isn't an option, consider using a U-shaped memory foam pillow or a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and compression on your skin.

2. Sugar is the devil!
A diet high in sugar can lead to premature wrinkles. Sugar molecules attach to collagen in a process called glycation, causing collagen to break down. Reducing sugar intake and increasing antioxidants in your diet can help maintain skin nutrition and prevent early wrinkling.

3. SPF is KEY!
Using SPF daily is crucial in preventing premature skin aging. UV rays break down collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. SPF protects against both UVA and UVB rays, which cause sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and long-term skin damage. By shielding your skin from these harmful effects, SPF helps maintain elasticity, reduces dark spots, and prevents DNA damage that can lead to skin cancer. For effective protection, choose a broad- spectrum SPF of at least 30 and apply it daily.  Consistent use ensures youthful, healthy skin and long-term benefits.

4. Water water water!!!
Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining plump, healthy skin. Dehydration, whether from not drinking enough water or lack of hydrating foods in your diet, can cause your skin to appear dull and aged. Aim for at least 8 cups of water per day, which is roughly 2 litres. This is the standard recommendation for overall hydration and include water-rich foods in your diet, such as fruits (e.g., watermelon, oranges) and vegetables (e.g., cucumber, lettuce), which can contribute to overall hydration.

5. You’re city centric…?

Living in a polluted city exposes your skin to free radicals, which cause cell damage and accelerate aging. Using antioxidant serums containing vitamin C can help protect your skin from this damage.

6. You love a drink,.. Or three
Alcohol dehydrates your skin and can lead to dullness and puffiness. It also weakens your skin's antioxidant defenses, making it more vulnerable to free radical damage. Combat this by using antioxidant serums and staying hydrated.

7. You don’t know what products or treatments to use..?
Using too many skincare products can cause irritation and inflammation, resulting in dull and rough skin. To maintain healthy skin, stick to a simple routine with products designed to protect the skin barrier. I would suggest starting with a gentle, hydrating cleanser, avoid over-exfoliation, and use a toner that suits your skin type. Be cautious with retinol and retinoids, gradually introducing them to your routine to avoid irritation and peeling.  Finding the right products often involves some trial and error, so my tip is to start with small sizes or ask for samples when possible! Always check the ingredients to ensure they are suitable for your skin type especially if you have any medical conditions. Also,  avoid any known allergens or ingredients that could have caused you issues in the past. Finally, give your products a chance to work, and follow the classic order: cleanse, tone, serum,
moisturise, and finish with SPF!

8. Your Stress Levels Are Out Of Control
High stress levels and lack of sleep increase cortisol, which damages your skin's connective tissues. Incorporating stress-reducing activities like exercise, yoga, or meditation can improve your skin's health.

9. You Smoke, Or Are Exposed To Smoke
Smoking introduces free radicals that damage skin cells and accelerate aging. Even exposure to secondhand smoke can have similar effects. Avoiding smoke and using protective skincare products can mitigate these risks.

10. You’re Not Sleeping Enough
Good sleep is crucial for healthy skin because it allows for proper cellular repair and regeneration. During deep sleep, the body increases blood flow to the skin, which helps repair damage from UV exposure and other environmental factors. Sleep also boosts
collagen production, reducing wrinkles and improving skin elasticity. Additionally, adequate rest reduces cortisol levels, preventing stress-induced skin issues like acne and inflammation. Consistently getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep enhances overall skin tone, texture, and appearance, making it a vital component of an effective skincare routine.
