Fires de Llucmajor - Darrera Fira (Last Fair)

Friday 11th - Sunday 13th October 2024

The Fires de Llucmajor, one of Mallorca's most historic festivals, returns this October for its 478th edition. This exciting blend of tradition, culture, and community spirit, which runs over several weeks, culminates in a series of key events from Friday, October 11th, to Sunday, October 13th, known as the Darrera Fira (Last Fair). Visitors and locals alike will gather to celebrate Llucmajor’s heritage with an array of activities, fairs, and exhibitions. Here's a guide to the main events taking place during this special weekend:

Friday, October 11: Opening Day and Mostra Llucmajorera

The festivities kick off on Friday, October 11th, with the opening of the XLIV Mostra Llucmajorera, a grand showcase of the town’s craftsmanship, agriculture, and industry, running from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and resuming again from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This exhibition, located along Paseo Jaume III, offers visitors a chance to explore the traditional products of the region, including local crafts and commercial goods.

At 4:30 p.m., the streets come alive with the Xeremiers de sa Marina (Mallorcan bagpipers), who will lead a parade from Plaza Espanya to Paseo Jaume III, setting the festive tone for the weekend.

At 5:00 p.m., local dignitaries will officially inaugurate the XLIV Mostra Llucmajorera and the various artistic exhibitions across the town. These exhibitions include works by local artists such as Cosme Andreu Cardell’s El color de l'expressionisme, and Francisco de la Hoz Jiménez’s Paisatges de Mallorca, among others. Each exhibit offers a unique perspective on Mallorca’s natural beauty and cultural identity, giving visitors a deeper connection to the island.

Saturday, October 12: Craft Workshops and Equestrian Show

Saturday continues the celebration with more time to explore the XLIV Mostra Llucmajorera, open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Once again, the xeremiers will lead a lively parade through the streets at 5:30 p.m., creating an enchanting atmosphere in the town.

For families and children, the afternoon brings craft workshops hosted by the Escola de Ball de Bot Calabruix, starting at 6:00 p.m. These hands-on workshops allow youngsters to engage with traditional Mallorcan dance and crafts, nurturing a love for local culture.

Behind the CEIP Rei Jaume III school, at 6:00 p.m., an exciting equestrian show will take place. Attendees can enjoy a pre-show meet-and-greet with the horses, offering a perfect photo opportunity for animal lovers.

Traditional Mallorcan Dancing

Sunday, October 13: Darrera Fira – Traditional Fair and Livestock Show

Sunday marks the grand finale of the Darrera Fira, also known as the 13th October Traditional Fair, a day that blends the modern and traditional aspects of Llucmajor. Starting at 9:00 a.m., visitors can explore the Mostra Ramadera, an exhibition of livestock that includes native breeds, falconry demonstrations, and even displays of local dog breeds like the Ca de Pastor Mallorquí and Ca Rater Mallorquí. This is a must-visit for animal lovers and those interested in rural Mallorcan life. Car enthusiasts can also head to Calle Francesc Aulet for an impressive display of rally vehicles from the Escuderia Llucmajor, adding a touch of motor sport to the day.

The heart of the day is the Darrera Fira, which officially opens at 10:45 a.m. with the iconic Trobada de Gegants (Giant Figures Gathering) and the presence of Miquel and Càndida, the town’s giant figures, who will parade through the streets. This is followed by the visit of local and regional authorities to the fair, accompanied by the Llucmajor Music Band, and the ceremonial pigeon release on Paseo Jaume III.

At 11:30 a.m., a dog agility exhibition by the TopCan Agility Club will entertain the crowd behind the CEIP Rei Jaume III, followed by a popular ballad performance at 1:00 p.m. by the group Es Basció de s’Illa from Maó, bringing traditional music and dance to the forefront of the celebration.

The evening culminates with the Ball de Bot (traditional Mallorcan dance) performance at 6:00 p.m., featuring groups like Castanyetes en Festa, Dit i Fet, and more. This lively dance event is a beautiful tribute to the island’s cultural heritage.
